Dear GBTA Members,

Like so many of you, I am adapting to physical distancing in the age of Covid-19.  I am working full-time and writing this letter from my home in Boston.

Never in a million years would I have thought the travel industry or our world would look like it does.  I know that we are all going through so much.  We are often stuck in our homes, forced to homeschool our children, worried about our parents and loved ones, worried about going to the grocery store, and concerned about whether we are taking all the necessary precautions to keep ourselves safe.

I have heard from many members who have been asked to take a pay cut, others who have been furloughed, and some who have been laid off.  Times are very tough.  It’s hard to imagine that one day we will emerge from all of this, and I am confident that we will.

We could never have anticipated how appropriate this year’s Convention theme was going to be—Together.  And Together is what we are—united with our fellow members, our neighbors, and our fellow humans against an unseen virus with devastating consequences. GBTA has always been about working together toward common goals. Our definition of together may be a bit different now, but our mission and principles remain the same.  Together, our industry is stronger, and we will get through this.

We at GBTA are here for you.   And here’s how:

  • We will be issuing 12-month memberships to all members who have lost their jobs or have been furloughed. Your GBTA membership will now be considered Honorary under our bylaws.

  • We will be upgrading our travel job board for those who are out of work or who might be hiring during this time--- you can access it in the Daily News Brief and it will be featured on our gbta.org homepage.

  • We have been working tirelessly in our lobbying efforts—most successfully in the recent Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act that will be hugely beneficial to some of the cornerstones of our industry.

  • We have been working closely with our partners in Brussels and with our lobbyists there too—to ensure that all European governments know the importance of the global travel industry—because of all the jobs it creates and how it also facilities so much business that is routinely done face-to-face.

  • We have new content on the GBTA website.  We are launching a new podcast this week, the GBTA Industry Forum Series, where we will talk to business travel leaders across the industry about the coronavirus, its effects on the industry, and the ways in which companies are responding. Southwest Airlines President Tom Nealon is our first guest.

  • We will post webinars and other informative professional development courses that may be helpful.  All will be easily accessible on our homepage gbta.org.

  • Many great conversations are taking place in the GBTA Hub.  Feel free to check in and hear how your colleagues are managing under these conditions.

Finally, I am announcing that we are going to move this year’s GBTA Convention.  Originally scheduled for late July, it now will be held November 7-11 in Denver.  We rescheduled the event after several weeks discussing options with officials at the Denver Convention Center.

We all agreed that there was no way to hold a safe, healthy, and successful conference in July, so we agreed to push the dates out as far as possible in 2020. We will continue to work with the State of Colorado, City of Denver, the Convention Center and Health officials to ensure we can have our Convention in November.

Our hope is that the pandemic will pass within the next few months and we will be able to resume our normal activities.  I will continue to keep you informed on the status and look forward to getting together with you in person sooner rather than later. As always GBTA are here to help, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your key contact or myself.

Stay safe and don’t hesitate to connect with me on LinkedIn or email.

Sincerely,

Scott Solombrino
